French-Egyptian designer Christian Louboutin had been drawing shoes most of his life, but he was first inspired to create stilettos when he saw a sign outside the Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie, which banned women from wearing the high-heels inside the museum for fear they would scratch the floors. He wanted to create a shoe that defied the sign and empowered women.
Read moreHe opened his first salon in Paris in 1991, where his fame as a shoe designer flourished. In 1993, he created his red-soled shoes quite by accident. Frustrated by a creative block, he grabbed his assistant’s nail polish and painted the sole of the shoe he was working on. He knew instantly it would be a hit. Louboutin is now famous for his signature shiny red stilettos and red-soled shoes - stylish, bold accent pieces that pull together any outfit.
Louboutin has catered to Princess Caroline of Monaco, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Nicki Minaj - to name a few. His stilettos were worn by Britney Spears in the “If U Seek Amy,” music video prior to their release on the market. They’ve been down the red carpet at numerous awards shows and were named the Most Prestigious Women’s Shoe in 2007, 2008, and 2009, topping the Luxury Institute’s annual Luxury Brand Status Index.
